Modern times give animals nearly as many rights as humans, but such was not the case in Victorian times. Unfortunately, there are numerous occasions when animals are made to suffer at the hands of humans in the Sherlock Holmes stories.

Who are the animals in question and what nefarious purposes did their sad fates serve? It's just a Trifle.
